The Perfect Race.
One of the main reason for these horrendous experiments were to make the perfect race called the 'Aryan Race'. This is most commonly known to be a race with blue eyes, pale skin and blond hair. But more was taken notice of for the person to be classified as an Aryan. For instance, they had to have the right shaped and sized nose, as well as blue eyes, pale skin and blond hair. Women that were acknowledged as Aryans could have children with SS officers, to create more of the 'pure' race. The children were then taken off them an taught the Nazi way of living. The Number of Deaths Due to The Medical Experiments. Experiments were performed on over 1.500 twins which 200 individuals survived. 110 people were reported to have died from the freezing experiments during and after. With the malaria experiments over 1,000 people were used for them which less than half survived. With the altitude experiments out of the 200 that were experimented on 80 died straight away and the others were later executed, after they had examined them. This death toll is not to the exact number as there may of been many more that were not recorded. These are from many of the concentration or extermination camps not just from Auschwitz. Sterilization. A law was passed that people that had the following were to be sterilized, they were either weak-minded, schizophrenic, alcohol abusive, insane, blind, deaf or had physical deformities. Around 400,000 of them were sterilized because of this. Many experiments were also carried out to try and sterilize people, most of which included painful experiments like an injection into the uterus to try and glue it shut. Many more awful experiments were tried. The Aftermath. After the holocaust was over many of the people that survived the experiments were left permanently disabled, mutilated, with weakened bodies and mental distress. Several of the doctors were captured and they argued in their defence that there was no international law against medical experimentation. Modern Ethical Uses. From the freezing experiments done, some of the results have been used in modern research of hypothermia. At least 45 of the many discoveries have been referenced the experiments done in the second world war. This has caused an ethical dilemma for modern physicians who do not agree with the methods that were used to find this data. Many reject the research purely because of methodical inconsistences and others because they think that it is ethically wrong. |
